How to Distribute K-1 Forms to Partners

Who this is for: Accountants who manage partnership (1065) or S-Corporation (1120S) tax returns and need to distribute K-1 forms.

What you’ll learn: How to add K-1 recipients, distribute K-1 documents, and track delivery status.

Before you begin #

  • The tax return must be of type 1065 (Partnership) or 1120S (S Corporation).
  • Have each recipient’s name, email, recipient type, and ownership percentage ready.

Step-by-step instructions #

Step 1: Open the K-1s tab #

On the tax return detail page, click the K-1s tab. This tab is only visible for 1065 and 1120S return types.

Step 2: Click Add K-1 Recipient #

Click the Add K-1 button to open the Add K-1 Recipient modal.

Step 3: Fill in recipient details #

Enter the following information:

  • Recipient Name — The partner or shareholder’s full name.
  • Recipient Email — Their email address for delivery.
  • Recipient Type — Partner (for 1065) or Shareholder (for 1120S).
  • Ownership Percentage — Their ownership share (0–100%).

Click Add K-1 to save.

Step 4: Track delivery status #

Each K-1 entry shows its current status: Pending, Sent, Viewed, or Downloaded.

Step 5: Resend a K-1 #

Click the three-dot menu on a K-1 row and select Resend K-1 to send the access email again.

Step 6: Remove a K-1 recipient #

Click the three-dot menu and select Remove K-1 to delete a distribution.

What happens next #

Recipients receive an email with a secure link to view and download their K-1 form. The Activity tab logs all K-1 delivery events.

Troubleshooting #

  • K-1s tab not visible: K-1 distributions are only available for 1065 (Partnership) and 1120S (S Corporation) return types.
  • “Ownership must be between 0 and 100”: Enter a valid percentage.
