Assign a Bookkeeper and Reviewer and Sign Off a Close

Who this is for: Firm owners, admins, and reviewers who manage the review and sign-off of a month-end close.

What you’ll learn: How to assign a bookkeeper and reviewer, submit a close for review, request changes, and close the period.

Before you begin #

  • Open the client’s Month End tab and select the period.
  • Closing a period should be done by the assigned reviewer.

Step-by-step instructions #

Step 1: Assign the bookkeeper and reviewer #

Select the assignee avatars in the header to open the picker. Choose a Bookkeeper to prepare the close and a Reviewer to sign it off. Both carry forward to future periods until changed.

Step 2: Adjust the period settings #

Select the gear icon to open Period Settings. Set the Large Transaction Threshold that flags big transactions for review, and turn on Require Attachments if receipts are needed. These save as the client’s default.

Step 3: Submit for review #

When the checklist and review items are handled, select Submit for Review in the header, choose the reviewer, and confirm. The period moves to In Review.

Step 4: Close or request changes #

As the reviewer, select Close Period to lock the close, or Request Changes to send it back to the preparer with feedback. A closed period can be reopened with Reopen if a correction is needed.

What happens next #

A closed period is locked and shows the Closed badge. Requesting changes returns the period to In Progress and shows your feedback to the preparer. Every status change is recorded in the activity log.

Troubleshooting #

  • Problem: The Close Period button is not visible. Only the assigned reviewer can close or request changes. Confirm you are the reviewer, or ask them to sign off.
  • Problem: You need to change a closed period. Select Reopen to move it back to In Review, make the change, then close it again.
